Preparing your home for winter…. preparing for winter can be a lot more time consuming than many people would imagine. There are several key areas of the home & garden that require your attention to ensure that both your home & wallet remain intact during the winter months!.

You have to make sure that your gardens are covered when you are preparing for winter and that you have everything that could suffer out of the yard so that they cannot get damaged by the snow & ice. You have to make sure that when you store things away for the winter months that they are not going to get wet or damaged when spring melts off the snow.
Here are a few suggestions you might want to take into consideration when you’re preparing for winter & trying to get your home ready for the winter months to come so you do not waste time or money later on.

Depending on the drafts that you get around the basement or side of your house you might want to line it with hay bales or something similar. This will create a wind proof barrier that will stop some of the drafts from entering the house keeping your house warmer during the winter months. Some people actually do this to keep the heat and the cool in all year round!. The one thing you have to make sure when using these hay bales is that you change them every year at least, also check them regularly to make sure no rodents have made a home in the bales.

When preparing for winter, you also want to make sure you check your windows and doors for drafts so they do not let the cold air in. This is one of the leading causes for are heating bills to skyrocket during the winter months. Many people do not realize that the windows and doors can leak up to 20% of the total heat that is going into your home. It is very important to make sure you check on these drafts so you can eliminate the cold air transfer between outside and inside.

Another thing that you want to make sure that you check when you’re getting your house ready for winter is the chimney or fresh air supply coming into the home. When your furnace runs it needs a constant supply of fresh air. With the fresh air supply being plugged or your chimney being clogged you could end up killing your family with carbon dioxide. Before you start up your furnace you want to make sure that everything is clear from debris or old birds nests which will then allow greater airflow to your furnace.

Preparing For Winter – Winterizing Your Roof

When you are winterizing your home and getting it ready for the cold winter months ahead you have to think about your roof. Many people believe that they do not have to worry about the roof when winter time is here because the snow will just fall off.

In some cases the roof might act as a barrier and hold the snow in a corner and not allow it to fall off or run freely when it melts. This can lead to an ice dam or even worse roof damage that because even more damage to the existing ceiling in your house. If you want to make sure that your house is completely ready for winter you are going to want to make sure that your roof has some special features on it as well.

One thing that you can do in order to make sure that snow and ice does not pile up in the corners of your roof is to purchase a heating line that runs up your roof that is safe for the shingles. Many people run this along the bottom of their roof to make sure that there is no ice that can build up when it starts getting colder.

You can do this because it eliminates the amount of weight that your roof can hold plus helping out to shed the water away from the house. This heating element makes sure that the your eve of your house does not hold too much weight and allows the water to flow properly through the corners of your house.

Another thing that you can do to make sure that your entire house is ready for winter is to make sure that you have some type of shovel or roof rake to remove excess that can be easily reached that is if you do not have a heating element. You want to be able to try to remove as much snow & ice as possible so the weight does not pile up on your roof causing damage to both the exterior & the interior of the home. It will also cause damage to the shingles and the rafters if this weight is not properly displaced.

Keep this in mind when you’re looking to completely winterize your home so that you know that you have everything you need when the snowballs start flying!.

You also want to make sure that you’re cold air intake and your chimney does not take on a bunch of snow when preparing for winter. You can purchase little covers that will allow the snow to fall off the side and act like a roof for the openings. This will give you a better cold air intake and know that your pipes are not going to freeze up because there’s too much snow that has gotten inside.

Preparing For Winter – Protecting Water and Sewer Lines

There’s nothing worse than going out to the pump house to find out that your pump as frozen. During the cold months of winter there are some special preparations that you have to make sure that you have done so you do not end up with no water or busted pipelines when spring rolls around.

Every year you hear about many people losing water because their pipes have froze because they do not have proper insulation on the pipes or their sewer backs up because it is frozen. There are simple solutions to these problems. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that your water lines do not freeze and bust and you will have complete access to your sewer without having to have somebody come in and pump it out.

The one thing that you want to do when it starts getting colder is to take hay bales and spread them over your septic tank. This as extra insulation and allows the heat from the earth to stay in to make sure that your tank does not freeze. When people start having problems with their septic lines it is usually at the point where the sewer lines connect to the septic tank.

This is one of the main problems that people deal with because that is a majority of the problems when it freezes. You want to bust the hay bales up and spread them evenly across a septic tank to add more insulation so your pipes do not freeze. You can also spread the hay around from the septic tank to the house over the sewer lines. This will give them added insulation when it starts to freeze.

When you are concerned about your water lines you have to think of where your pump is located in your house. Some people have a pump house outside of the home. You want to make sure that there is a constant supply of heat during the winter to make sure that your pump does not freeze up and bust. You can do this by adding a heat lamp which in turn ads light to the small area as well as heat.

Whilst preparing for winter you also have to consider the water lines under the house are well. If you have a basement it is usually easier to keep your pipes thawed because you have heat constantly circulating. Some people will have to wrap pipe insulation around their water lines in order to make sure that they are going to work properly during the winter months.

No matter which way you have to go about doing this make sure that there’s a constant heat supply around your pipes so they do not freeze during the winter. Preparing for winter can be a somewhat tiresome job to have to do each year, but by doing it correctly will ensure that all your utility services that you rely on through the hard winter months are not interrupted by breaks & leaks once the Spring thaws set in.

The summer months are nearly over and it is now time to start to prepare for the winter months. Cold weather is coming so you have to make sure that all of your heating requirement preparations are organized and in place.

Many people do not realize it is actually easier to purchase fuel for heating your home during a summer when it is cheaper rather than trying to come up with money they need to fill the tank in the winter.

By prepaying your fuel to heat your house you could save a great deal of money on your heating costs. Not only does preparing help you save money but that is a great benefit as well as long as your fuel company offers a prepaid plan. Here are a couple of things you need to keep in mind when you are prepaying your fuel to heat your house during winter.

The first thing that you need to consider when preparing is the cost. Most of the time, the fuel that you use to heat your house will be cheaper during the summer months is simply because demand for heating oil during the summer months is much lighter than during those long cold winter months.

If you are using propane all year long such as for a cook stove then you’re not going to worry about prepaying because you’ll have a constant bill anyway.

If you have a fuel oil furnace that heat your home during winter it is best to purchase number one diesel over the summer so that you have money buildup into your account when you need to order fuel oil for your house.

It is getting pretty bad now that some companies will not send out a fuel truck unless you have at least $200 in your account. This is a safety precaution that many companies have set up to make sure that they are going to get the money even in a no heat emergency situation. They have to make sure that they are getting their money so it is in your best interest to try and prepay your fuel so this does not happen to you.

Another thing that’s great about prepaying your fuel for the winter is that you do not have a bill. For each check you get during the summer and you should try and deposit at least $100 into your heating bill to make sure that you have enough for the winter.

This will give you freedom and knowing that you will not have the heating bill all winter long. If you are able to maintain your heat you will be able to have a remainder left during the spring that you can just build on for next year.
