You have to make sure that your gardens are covered when you are preparing for winter and that you have everything that could suffer out of the yard so that they cannot get damaged by the snow & ice. You have to make sure that when you store things away for the winter months that they are not going to get wet or damaged when spring melts off the snow.

Depending on the drafts that you get around the basement or side of your house you might want to line it with hay bales or something similar. This will create a wind proof barrier that will stop some of the drafts from entering the house keeping your house warmer during the winter months. Some people actually do this to keep the heat and the cool in all year round!. The one thing you have to make sure when using these hay bales is that you change them every year at least, also check them regularly to make sure no rodents have made a home in the bales.
